Years ago, when Kitty left Australia, she was probably better known for her character work on Full Frontal (a TV sketch show, not a nudie mag) and The Sketch Show which,  as the title suggests, is also a TV sketch show, not a nudie mag.

With zero nudie mag offers coming in and no more sketch shows muck around in, Kitty decided to pursue a career in standup which is why she up and moved to London where she honed her skills working the pre-eminent UK comedy club circuit. For the record she also worked the not so pre-eminent UK comedy club circuit and did her fair share of egregious gigs all over the United Kingdom.

For the past eight years she’s been a regular at all the best clubs and all the big festivals around the world, including Edinburgh, Montreal and Aspen. She even managed to do comedy in Japan, Holland, Germany and South Africa - quite an achievement really as those countries are all well known for their excellent senses of humour.

But you can’t waft about the world forever so eventually she came back home and wafted around Australia instead, supporting visiting international artists such as Wayne Brady and Jason Alexander. She travelled all over the country with the Melbourne Comedy Festival Roadshow in 2009, 37 gigs in 32 towns in 35 minutes...or maybe it was days, who can remember.

Since then she’s been popping up on Good News Week and most recently on The 7pm Project  with her own brand of 99% fact free humour.

It’s been a long time coming but now she’s finally ready to come and do her thing in Darwin, to launch herself on a largely unsuspecting audience with the show CHARMING & ALARMING.

For two nights only at the Darwin Entertainment Centre she will showcase a definitive collection of her best standup along with some special extras as well...just like a DVD only in real life!

Kitty describes her comedy as:

“A little bit oowah”

Which is to say people often laugh then say: “Oowah, did she really say that?”

The Edinburgh Evening News summed it up as:

“Cruel, vicious, charming and innocent.”

Kitty Flanagan Spoke the Territory Regional Weekly ahead of her Darwin Shows this weekend we started by asking Kitty

Q You are  a regular on Good News Week what is the most ridiculous outfit you have seen Mikey Robbins wear?

A Probably the Bumble Bee outfit. That was a good one. I think he has done just about every outfit there is by now.

Q Have you ever been on the couch with Paul McDermott?

A I have been on the couch with Paul McCDermott and it was both  frightening and fun.  You need to remember that the audience is there and no to reveal too much.

I mentioned a link between orgasms and Schnitzels  and I got a lot of emails from men afterwards.  I might have revealed more than  I should have .

Q You’re heading to Darwin soon for the Show Charming and Alarming, do you think people going to the show will be more charmed or alarmed?

A I think it will be a fairly even mix of both.  Hopefully people will be more charmed than alarmed.

Q You have travelled all around the world doing comedy how do audiences in the different countries respond?

A It is really different performing in a place like Holland. The audience just sits there and looks at you. Instead of heckling they put up their hands and ask you to explain the jokes if they don’t understand them.

Then at the end of the show they all come up and shake your hand and tell you what a great show it was.

Q Have you visited Darwin before?

A I have been there before with the Melbourne Comedy Roadshow. I was a good show and we had a really good response. I am looking forward to being there next Friday.

I went to Throb Nightclub last time I was there and saw the most amazing Drag Show. Unfortunately I won’t have much free time on this visit.

Q How do you feel about hecklers?

A Hecklers can be good if they are not too negative. If they say something in a good spirit they can be a good part of the show. If they are too aggressive it can be a bad thing.

They also need to remember that the comedian is the one who is in control of the show and some of the performers that I have worked with have little trouble with dealing with them.

Q How do you think the Australian Comedy scene is faring at the moment. Are there some good comedians coming through?

A There are definitely some good performers out there. Live performance is really what stand up is all about. You get that audience interaction that you really don’t have on television.
