Events : Light the night Darwin

Excitement is building in Darwin with the Leukaemia Foundation’s inspiring event, Light the Night, this Friday night.
Darwin’s sky will be awash with gold, white and blue light on the night of Friday 10th September as the local community light balloons to remember, celebrate and give hope to people with blood cancer. Money raised from Light the Night will fund much needed research into better treatments and cures and fund free Leukaemia Foundation support services to patients and their families, including free accommodation, transport, emotional support, financial assistance and education.
First time Light the Night Darwin participant Renae Tanner will be lighting a white balloon proudly for her older sister Melissa. Melissa, aged 33, was diagnosed with lymphoma, a form of blood cancer, just four weeks after giving birth to her second child in April this year. The family has rallied behind Melissa with great support, with younger sister Anita giving up work to move in with Melissa and help raise her two young children.
“I will be holding a white balloon in celebration of survivorship as it expresses my positive thoughts for Melissa that we can make it through this,” says Renae.
“I am positive that my sister will be a white balloon survivor.”
Renae has been working tirelessly fundraising in the lead up to Light the Night, placing her as the current top fundraiser in Darwin for the event at nearly $2,000.
Renae will walk with family and friends in Liberty Square on Friday 10th September as part of her ‘Bennett Family’ team and will unite with hundreds of other Territorians who will bring the night’s sky alight in hope for a brighter future.
