Photojournalist Penny Tweedie’s extraordinary images of Arnhem Land people are on display in a free exhibition at the Northern Territory Library in Parliament House Darwin until Sunday 5 September 2010.

Northern Territory Library Director Jo McGill said the photographs have been drawn from Penny’s book Spirit of Arnhem Land.

“These photographs provide a unique visual celebration of Arnhem Land people as they strive to maintain their traditional beliefs and culture,” Ms McGill said.

“Tweedie arrived in Australia in 1975 and was soon drawn to Aboriginal culture and the land rights movement so she left her base in London to work in the Northern Territory.

“Tweedie’s books This is My Country - A View of Arnhem Land, Spirit of Arnhem Land and Standing Strong chronicle Aboriginal life at the end of the 20th Century and offer a story of people connected to their country for over 50,000 years.”

Penny Tweedie has worked in 70 countries for international magazines including National Geographic, Newsweek, Time, Paris Match, Traveller and Marie Claire as well as UK magazines, charities, NGO’s and businesses. In 1999 she won the Australian Walkley Award for feature photography.

Also at the Northern Territory Library this week is an evening talk Current Politics and Deplorable Media Coverage by political journalist and commentator Mungo MacCallum at 5.15pm tonight, Tuesday 29 June 2010.

“Mungo has written several books including Run, Johnny, Run written after the Federal Election in 2004 and Poll Dancing in 2007 and is a feature writer for The Monthly and Quarterly Essay,” Ms McGill said.
